Hoodies and sweatshirts are the pieces we reach for most when we want to feel comfortable. Their soft, brushed inside is also the part that suffers most in the wash, so a little care goes a long way.
Wash inside out
Turning a hoodie inside out protects the outer surface and any print from rubbing against other clothes in the drum. Close the zip and empty the pocket first.
- Wash with similar colours and fabrics, away from towels and jeans.
- Choose a gentle programme and follow the temperature on the care label.
- Skip fabric softener on fleece-backed pieces: it can make the brushed side feel flat.
Avoid bobbles
Bobbles (pilling) appear where fabric rubs: under the arms, at the cuffs and where a bag strap sits. A gentle wash and a fuller drum with less movement help. If bobbles do appear, a fabric shaver removes them in a minute.
Dry flat, not hot
Lay hoodies flat or over a drying rack rather than hanging them by the hood, which stretches the neckline. High dryer heat can shrink cotton and harden the soft inside, so air dry or use a low setting.
Fold, do not hang: hangers stretch the shoulders of heavy sweatshirts over time.
Store them folded
Fold hoodies in half lengthways, tuck the sleeves in and fold again. Find new favourites in the women's hoodies, men's hoodies and girls' hoodies.
