Layering for changing weather

Cold mornings, warm afternoons: how to build outfits you can add to and take away from as the day changes.

Spring and autumn days can feel like three seasons in one. Layering lets you stay comfortable from the first coffee to the walk home, without carrying a heavy coat.

The three layers

  • Base: a T-shirt or long-sleeve top in a soft, breathable fabric.
  • Middle: a sweatshirt, hoodie or knit that holds warmth.
  • Outer: a light jacket that blocks wind and light rain.

Keep it light

Several thin layers keep you warmer than one thick one, because air is trapped between them, and you can take one off when the sun comes out. Choose pieces that are easy to carry or tie around your waist.

Play with lengths

Let a longer top show under a cropped sweatshirt, or a hoodie peek out from under a jacket. Different lengths make an outfit look considered rather than bulky.

Pick one colour family for your layers and everything goes with everything.

Finish with accessories

A scarf adds warmth in seconds and is the easiest layer to remove. Start with the women's hoodies and men's hoodies.
