Children do not sit still, and their clothes should not ask them to. When you shop for everyday kids' clothing, a few practical points matter more than anything else.
Room to move
Look for stretchy fabrics and elasticated waistbands that let children run, climb and sit cross-legged. Joggers and leggings are made for this.
Easy on, easy off
- Wide neck openings and pull-on trousers help children dress themselves.
- Fewer buttons mean quicker changes after a muddy afternoon.
- For babies, snap fastenings make nappy changes simple.
Made for the wash
Kids' clothes get washed often. Cotton and cotton blends cope well with frequent washing; check the care label and wash similar colours together.
Layers for outdoors
A T-shirt plus a sweatshirt or hoodie is easier to adjust than one heavy layer. Children warm up quickly while playing and cool down quickly when they stop.
Let them choose one piece themselves. Children happily wear what they picked.
